How It Works

Nurtec ODT blocks the CGRP receptor on trigeminal nerve endings and in the brain. During a migraine, elevated CGRP levels drive vasodilation, inflammation, and pain. By blocking the receptor, Nurtec stops these processes. For acute use, it provides rapid relief (dissolves on the tongue in seconds). For prevention, regular every-other-day dosing maintains baseline CGRP receptor blockade to reduce migraine frequency.

Mechanism: Rimegepant is a selective, small-molecule antagonist of the calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor. CGRP is a neuropeptide released during migraine attacks that causes vasodilation, neurogenic inflammation, and pain signaling in the trigeminovascular system. By blocking the CGRP receptor, rimegepant interrupts the migraine cascade at a highly specific target.

Who It's For

Indication

Acute treatment of migraine (with or without aura) and preventive treatment of episodic migraine in adults

Adults with episodic migraine (4–14 migraine days per month) who want a single medication for both acute and preventive treatment. Ideal for patients who have failed or cannot tolerate triptans, those with cardiovascular risk factors (unlike triptans, gepants do not cause vasoconstriction), or anyone who experiences nausea during attacks (the dissolving tablet requires no water).
