How It Works

Yaz prevents pregnancy through three mechanisms: suppressing ovulation by inhibiting FSH and LH release, thickening cervical mucus to block sperm, and thinning the endometrial lining. Its unique progestin (drospirenone) also has anti-androgenic effects that improve acne and anti-mineralocorticoid effects that reduce bloating, making it effective for PMDD symptoms.

Mechanism: Drospirenone is a fourth-generation progestin with unique anti-androgenic and anti-mineralocorticoid properties (derived from spironolactone). It suppresses ovulation, thickens cervical mucus, and thins the endometrium. The anti-androgenic effect helps with acne and hirsutism; the anti-mineralocorticoid effect reduces water retention and bloating.
